Cybersecurity

Advice

Most tasks in the field of cybersecurity, previously belonging to the Federal Chancellery, was taken over by the Federal Ministry for Interior on 1 April 2025. This information will remain on the Federal Chancellery's website until it has been taken over by the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Legal basis for the change of responsibilities is the "Amended Ministerial Law (in German: Bundesministeriengesetz) 1986", amended Act "Bundesministeriengesetz-Novelle 2025, BGBl. I Nummer 10/2025".

What is cybersecurity?

The EU Cybersecurity Act defines cybersecurity as "the activities necessary to protect network and information systems, the users of such systems, and other persons affected by cyber threats".

In the age of digitalisation, our society is more interlinked than ever. The progress being made in digital technology has changed our day-to-day life just as much as our everyday work and our business dealings. Citizens are equally as dependent on digital services as companies and government bodies, which rely on digital networks and infrastructure to fulfil their core tasks. But our society is becoming more vulnerable as we grow increasingly interlinked and as our dependency on digital services grows. Cyberattacks and incidents can have a massive impact on our society and economy, as they hamper the provision of services and interrupt business and official processes.

This is why improving Austria's digital resilience and ensuring cybersecurity in the digital world overall are of crucial importance for both our prosperity and our security. Cybersecurity is therefore one of Austria's main priorities and poses a central, joint challenge for the state, economy, academia and society.
