Cooperation with the Council of Europe

As an intergovernmental organisation established after the Second World War, the Council of Europe focuses on humanistic and democratic values in its cultural and educational activities. In the field of culture, the European Cultural Convention and the Steering Committee for Culture, Heritage and Landscape (CDCPP) are of key importance.

The areas of responsibility of the Steering Committee for Culture, Heritage and Landscape (CDCPP) include the implementation of the relevant conventions of the Council of Europe as well as the resolutions of the 2005 Summit of Heads of State and Government in Warsaw as well as 2023 in Reykjavík and the Conference of Ministers responsible for culture in Moscow 2013, the Conference of Ministers responsible for heritage in Namur 2015 as well as the Conference of Ministers of Culture in Strasbourg in 2022.

Among the central priorities of CDCPP’s work are building an indicator framework on culture and democracy, understanding the impact of digitisation on culture and the implementation of the European Heritage Strategy for the 21st Century.

Compendium of Cultural Policies and Trends in Europe

Online databank of reports and analyses on cultural policy developments in 43 member states. From 1998 to 2017 the Council of Europe coordinated the programme. From 2017-2020 the coordination wass with the Assocation of the Compendium of Cultural Policies and Trends (CCPT) in the Netherlands. As from 2021 this function is performed by the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft Bonn. Austria is a member of the Association.

2021 the digital exhibition „Free to Create – Create to be Free“ was launched. It provides a fresh view promoting the importance of freedom of artistic expression and the role of art, culture and heritage in times when democracy is under pressure from regional and global challenges.

European Cultural Routes - "Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe"

Title granted to historically significant transit routes in Europe by the European Institute of Cultural Routes in Luxembourg. The institute is based on an enlarged partial agreement signed by 37 member states of the Council of Europe. Austria is a founding member.

In 2023 there are 48 certified cultural routes in Europe; 14 of them lead through Austria: European Mozart Ways, European Route of Jewish Heritage, Transromanica, European Cemeteries Route, European Route of Historic Thermal Towns, European Route of Ceramics, Réseau Art Nouveau Network, Via Habsburg, Iron Curtain Trail, Routes of Reformation, European Route of Industrial Heritage, Via Romea Germanica, Iron Age Danube Route and Historic Cafés Route.

Information on individual national cultural heritage strategies and a thesaurus in the field of cultural property protection.
Austria has been part of this network since 2009 and provides information on monument protection, sponsorship, and administrative structures.

European Heritage Days

The initiative aims at raising public awareness for less known cultural heritage sites. Austria has been involved in this activity since 1998.

Eurimages

The European Cinema Support Fund supports the co-production of feature, documentary and animated films of at least two member states. The Federal Chancellery serves as the political representative on the Eurimages administrative board, the Austrian Film Institute is in charge of operational tasks.
